When Monty Don s golden retriever, Nigel, became the surprise star of BBC s Gardeners World, inspiring huge interest, fan mail and even his own social media accounts, Monty Don wanted to explore what makes us connect with animals quite so deeply In many respects Nigel is a very ordinary dog charming, handsome and obedient, as so many are He is also a much loved family pet He is also a star By telling Nigel s story, Monty relates his relationships with other special dogs in his life in a memoir of his dogs past and very much present Witty, touching and life affirming, Nigel My Family and Other Dogs is wonderfully heartwarming Monty Don is a great writer coming out of the garden and into the hearts and homes of every dog lover in the UK I have always had a dog or dogs I cannot imagine life without them I am just as much a fan of Nigel as any besotted viewer In the book I explore why we love dogs and what they mean to us emotionally and domestically I look back on all the dogs in my life all of which I have loved deeply and which have been an essential part of my life So, this is the book of Nigel but also the book of all our dogs in every British family and a celebration of the deep love we feel for them Monty Don

Having recently got into watching Gardener s World great show by the way , I decided based on Monty Don s easy listening voice and nice persona, that I d take a punt on this book and see what all the fuss was about regarding Nigel and his other dogs Let me tell you, it does not disappoint I ve never met Nigel but feel as though I know the dog thoroughly thanks to Monty s brilliant writing and descriptions of his wonderful dog s mannerisms. The book has sad parts I ll admit that in a few places I cried, and if you re a pet owner, or anyone with a heart in fact, you ll find it hard not to feel a pang of sadness when he describes his past dogs that are no longer with him.Monty comes across as a very caring, decent bloke in this book It s just like on Gardener s World, and, if you watch that programme, you re at an advantage to know the garden he describes Longmeadow in the book, which of course is in some detail to help any reader that hasn t seen Gardener s World.I d recommend this book to anyone who likes dogs, especially Golden Retrievers There s a short history in there of them, but the main draw in of the book is how well Monty describes his dog and his dog s attitude, whilst never forgetting that each dog is its own dog and a reflection of its owner He does this very well I d also recommend it to anyone that enjoys Monty Don s work on Gardener s World, or anyone who wants an easy afternoon reading about a man and his many dogs. Thanks Monty for the lovely, heartwarming book I look forward to any others

If you could only ever read one book by Monty Don, then I urge you to make it this one.Such a beautiful and loving read about a mans love for his dog Monty writes this beautifully, and when reading it, you almost slip into an internal Monty voice. This lifted my heart, brought me smiles, made me nostalgic, and warmed me.What a fantastic book Thank you Monty, and of course, thank you Nigel X

What can I say I loved this book I have never owned a dog but for a few years we had the experience of sharing our next door neighbour s springer spaniel, a very bright and active 14 year old, while they were at work Sadly they moved house two years ago and we really miss our friend Jack who we all grew to love I have been thinking about buying a puppy for some time now.I now wholly understand how a dog becomes a member of the family and a loving, loyal companion After reading Monty s beautiful lyrical book about Nigel and his predecessors as the family pets I am not sure if I am up to the emotional challenge There are some lovely colour plates in the middle of the book and the chapters are dotted with black and white pictures too The narrative is largely written in the context of Monty s Long Meadow garden and he describes its development and changes over the years during his account of the lives and loves of his dogs.If I had one criticism I would say a sketch map of the layout of Long Meadow was be a useful addition to the preface or the appendix so that we can get our bearings as Monty describes the paths and separate gardens of the site.

Divine If you love dogs, you ll love it if you admire MD, you ll love it if you like to read engaging autobiographies, you ll love it Monty s writing is clear and crisp, there is a wonderful rhythm to his style of writing and he doesn t clutter the narrative by trying to be clever or overwrite the core purpose of the story I cried in Chapter 11 Gretel, bucket loads It hit me like a bullet.Reading this book is like spending time in his esteemed company, join him and Nigel on an unhurried walk around Longmeadow Perfect.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, read in a day.At times I admit I shed a tear, anyone who has buried a dog would struggle not too, as Monty recounts the burying of his own dogs Its a fascinating piece as illustrates wonderfully the bond between dog and man, painfully so statement of each dogs life. The tales of the garden are also an interesting read, but at its heart this book is about the sheer joy and brutal agony of bringing a dog into your life.

I love Monty Don and Nigel but this book as you might imagine is really about Monty s garden and he writes a lot about his planting schemes The book is also about the other dogs he and his family have had throughout his life and some of it is quite sad Not sure I agree with all his ideas on dog ownership This book gives you a real insight in to Monty Don, his constant fight with depression, his love of gardening and his love of dogs I think you have to have a real understanding of plants and a harder heart than I have to really appreciate this book.

I wouldn t normally have bought this book as I ve seen too many jumping on the bandwagon after the success of Marley and Me However, I have been entertained by Nigel and Monty and became interested in their story, especially after the sad news that Nigel had died This book is extremely well written and full of interesting anecdotes and glimpses into the lives of Monty, his family and his dogs, as well as fascinating history of the evolution of his garden Written in a way that mixes past and present that avoids too much predictability and keeps you reading avidly until the end A must read for fans of gardening and dog lovers I m glad I read this and would highly recommend.

You can hear Monty s voice as you read this charming but moving book Anyone who has lost a precious dog will identify with Monty and relive that feeling of loss again and again as each chapter deals with a successive pet Gardeners will enjoy the references throughout the book to Monty s garden but I would have really appreciated a plan of the layout.

Monty reminisces about the dogs that have been a part of his life, while describing his garden and even giving dog training tips.
