I m genuinely sorry I bought this I went into it with an open mind I d already given up modern wheat as I, like many others, am an average weight but feel uncomfortable after eating bread and pasta and wanted to know why The book starts reasonably enough with the changes modern wheat has undergone in order to increase yield and why this might cause problems in the human body, but then goes rapidly down hill The tone becomes hysterical Every single human ill you can think of is caused by wheat Wheat is death and I kid you not a slice of wholemeal bread is worse than a can of fizzy pop Even if you re not coeliac you are really or at least have the antibodies, so everyone avoid wheat but don t eat gluten free products because they re still carbs alarm bells start ringing and on this soon appears He lost me completely when he said There should be a government warning on it like cigarettes cheese, eggs and blueberries do not cause death, only wheat does and by Wheat it is soon made clear that Dr Davis means any carbohydrate whatsoever He says knowing full well that many people will have bought this because they feel healthy enough but are hoping for the promised magical weight loss by giving up one form of grain, modern wheat that if you re hoping for weight loss you won t get it if you cut out wheat but continue to eat other carbohydrates, including rice, oats, potatoes and bananas As another reviewer said, this makes the marketing of the book completely fraudulent.I bought the recipe book too What a waste of money Its Atkins with a strong emphasis on ground linseed, nuts, meat and dairy Only watery fruit and veg like berries and lettuce You re advised to eat enormous amounts of linseed, raw nuts, cheese, fatty meat and butter If you re missing pasta as a treat you can have konjac noodles which are zero calorie and zero carb, and in my experience, a serious choking hazard Unlike Atkins at there s no measuring carbs because you re not allowed any at all Not the book it claims to be Even when I was significantly overweight I was never attracted to the Atkins diet so why I thought a book by a similar American cardiologist looking to make a similar fortune would make any sense at all to me I don t know The wheat or maybe the new potatoes, they re the same right must have addled my brain.

This is a very informative book Prior to finding this book on , I knew very little about nutrition Now I have changed my way of eating and especially the way I shop for food, which is the key to eating a balanced diet I now know a great deal about carbohydrates, and over the past 18 months I have lost a great deal of weight There was one key sentence in the book that started me on my journey Dr Davis remarked that the most frequent question his patients asked was will I feel hungry on this diet and he answered unequivocally that you will never feel hungry on this diet I took him at his word, which proved to be true, and I have never looked back It s a great book for dipping in and out of I recommend it highly.

Once you ve read this book, you ll never see wheat the same way again I knew as a carb it was bad for my type II diabetic partner when he stays off wheat his numbers are much better , as starch turns to blood sugar extremely quickly I had no idea of how mutilated modern wheat is to original wheat, it s really a completely different plant, and we have just not had enough time to adapt to it, no matter what some insist Wheat also gives me skin rashes and sinus infections, after discovering this and staying off wheat as much as possible, I thought I was just odd, but no, it s fairly common which is a relief one doesn t really want to feel a freak ps gluten free is no better for either of us than glutened wheat Excellent book, do read it.

As a Leading Sports nutritionist, doing the GLUTEN DNA test at our QUA NUTRITION CLINICS allows athletes to AVOID gluten from wheat this book has some great insightinto the whole reasons why as much as possible you should avoid gluten. The food you eat is making you sick and the agencies that are providing you with guidelines on what to eat are giving dangerous advice with devastating health consequences You can change that today. In the Wheat Belly lifestyle, we reject the idea that grains should form the cornerstone of the human diet In fact, we reject grains outright, as they are all seeds of grasses incompatible with human digestion While I began this conversation by picking on the worst of the bunch modern semidwarf wheat understand that all grasses are related Grasses are, than most organisms, promiscuous and share genetics with each other quite readily That s how 28 chromosome emmer wheat, for instance, mated with another 14 chromosome wild grass, goat grass, and yielded the ancestor of all modern wheat, the first Triticum aestivum species It means that, when you consume wheat or the seed of any other grass, such as corn, millet, or rice, you are also consuming components expressed by many other grasses.Homo sapiens lack the digestive apparatus of ruminants that allow digestion of grasses We lack the continuously growing teeth that resist the abrasive effect of phytoliths, the sand like particles in grass blades we lack the capacity to produce 100 liters of saliva per day we lack a four compartment stomach that houses unique organisms that express the enzyme cellulase we lack a spiral colon also housing unique microorganisms to digest the components of grass We are a non grass consuming species.

Wheat Belly by Dr William Davis is a HUGE eye opener It should be mandatory in any high school, collages and Universities To double it up and expand Dr Davis book, I would strongly also suggest to read Grain Brain by Dr David Perlmutter These two doctors complement each other beautifully It is, for us at least, not about loosing weight but about maintaining my husband s and my health We are the so called baby boomers and we don t want to be in the statistics with Alzheimer s, dementia, heart disease, diabetic etc. I am also grateful that I always watched out for our health and now with knowing the damage wheat can do to our brain, it was not difficult to switch over to a wheat free diet So far, baking and cooking wheat free is the most amazing experience in preparing our meals Delicious beyond words I am so happy, that these books crossed my path

Disclaimer I am an author, however I do not know Dr Davis personally This review is based on my own experiences.I ve read most of the popular diet books written over the last 40 years Some were very good and others led me in the wrong direction, such as the low fat books of the 80 s that helped trigger the obesity and diabetes epidemic we see today Wheat Belly, written in a very easy to understand manner and sprinkled with humour throughout, takes the position that wheat is chiefly responsible for these and other maladies I had no idea that wheat, modified from what it was 50 years ago, is not completely broken down by the body and that the peptides produced actually cross the blood brain barrier like an opiate drug would, causing addiction and false food cravings At first I found it difficult to accept Then I tried it and lost 50 pounds in 6 months, without counting calories, by adopting a Mediterranean style of diet without the wheat My cravings disappeared and so did the brain fog Within 2 or 3 weeks my diabetes numbers were vastly improved and are now in the normal range I found through taking my glucose readings after meals in isolated trials that bread or cereal, whether it is whole grain or not, spikes my blood sugar readings like nothing else, not even a candy bar It isn t just the gluten, but the wheat itself Why diabetics are told by their nutritionists to eat healthy whole grains is a mystery to me It seems to only aggravate the condition The book cautions about falling for the allure of gluten free products that are just made of junk carbohydrates like potato starch and do just as much damage as wheat Dr Davis states that there is no such thing as healthy whole grains and based on my own experiences, I believe he is right The proof is in the pudding I m down 50 pounds, off high blood pressure medication and control my diabetes without the use of drugs Real food minus the wheat and getting some regular exercise form my prescription for good health My doctor is in total agreement. This is easily the best book I have ever read on nutrition It helped me identify and correct a lifelong problem If you need to lose weight and especially if you have diabetes, I strongly recommend this book and the book that follows it, Wheat Belly Total Health.

It s a good read Although I don t necessarily agree with everything in this book I do agree with a lot I had given up all grain for about 18 months and myself didn t drop a pound because of it and I would like to lose about 10 to 15 lbs But that s not why I did it I limit grain from my diet because of the chemicals and the carb value I would much rather get my carbs from vegetables I also have Fibro and osteoarthritis I know that nowadays there are chemicals and fillers widely used and accepted as OK Maybe that s why people are so sick and overweight Although not possible for everything, I try eat out of my garden and hunt what I can When the freezer and jars are empty then I go to the store for that.

The book is worth reading, however after reading it, I did my best to omit as many wheat containing foods for four months I gave it 5 stars, because I think others should read it for themselves, and give it a try I only lost 2 pounds of weight I agree with quite a bit of what the author says, but look around the community, and the majority of people I see with huge bellys seem to consume a lot of alcoholic beverages I passed the book on to a friend, and I haven t heard her opinion yet While omitting wheat from my diet, I did feel energetic, but I think that is because I omitted many carbohydrate foods at the same time, like breads and other baked goods.
