Churchill s history of the Second World War is, and will remain, the definitive work Lucid, dramatic, remarkable for its breadth and sweep and for its sense of personal involvement, it is universally acknowledged as a magnificent reconstruction Please note This book was originally published in six volumesThe Gathering StormTheir Finest HourThe Grand AllianceThe Hinge of Fate Closing the RingTriumph and Tragedy Churchill then condensed these into four volumes, which have since been released as one, rather hefty, publication Audible has published the unabridged recordings of Churchill s condensed volume, divided into four parts, as followsMilestone to DisasterAloneThe Grand AllianceTriumph and Tragedy

This MP3 set is a reading of the single volume abridgment of the 6 volume history It was not abridged by Sir Winston Churchill. While I can only echo the words of the other fine reviews here posted, the description of the content of this MP3 audiobook, and it s companion volumes is misleading. It is stated in the description that this is an unabridged version of the Second World War presented in 4 volumes While it does acknowledge later that the 4 volumes of this set are an abridgment, it then further misstates as do 1 or reviews presented here that Sir Winston did the abridgment himself This is not correct. In fact, the original 6 volume presentation of The Second World War was over 4000 pages, and 1,250,000 words The abridgment which is published as 4 volumes only in this MP3 set, as far as I can find is 498,000 words. The abridgment was not done by Winston Churchill, but by Dennis Kelly, the London lawyer who assisted Sir Winston in preparing the original 6 volume history It was approved by Winston Churchill, who did write an epilogue for it covering the years 1945 to 1957.Browsing through many Internet pages of sites devoted to the published works of Sir Winston Churchill, for collectors, I did not find this abridgment listed in them.Though Wikipedia states that the 4 volume condensed version was published, I have found no extant copies of such a work available in any of the used book bibliographies I have searched Only the single volume abridgment seems to exist today.None of this does, or should detract from the great listening experience this MP3 set affords, but it was confusing, to me, just what it was was represented to be.

I am a WWII history buff, so love these books four audio books, abridged by Winston Churchill from the original six volume, hardback series I describe the plot of this book as Full of surprises because I had no idea just how many times prior to Britain s entrance into the war that the whole disaster could have been avoided, but for appeasement and sheer idiocy on the part of PMs Baldwin and Chamberlain, as well as those politicians in Poland, the United States, etc Horrified These should be required listening reading for ALL citizens of every nation, as there are valuable lessons to be learned from mistakes that we have since repeated, many times.

Winston Churchill needs no introduction I found the beginning of this book interesting than the latter half When the narrative moves to specific battles and wartime incidents it gets a bit dry, but still very valuable information from the perspective of one of the most important figures of that time period.
